Rickey Smiley and Friends at The Orpheum

Rickey Smiley has been working the comedy circuit for the past sixteen years and it has paid off. Establishing himself as a clean comic, his down home Southern humor has made him a favorite in the nation's top comedy venues. From intimate comedy clubs to sold out crowds at Madison Square Garden, the Universal Amphitheater and the Lincoln Center, Rickey's unique style of humor resonates with his audiences unlike any other comic on the road today. Best known as host of the 2000 season of BET's "ComicView," Rickey led the show to its highest jump in ratings in the show's ten-year history. Smiley's characters have become his comedic trademark. From Bernice and her church announcements to Coach McClainy and his lack of motivational skills, Rickey's audiences can't seem to get enough of him. One of the most diverse entertainers today, Rickey's fan base covers a broad range - from the very young to the very old. His style of comedy is recognizable, approachable, and best of all - hilarious.

Dark Star Orchestra @ Minglewood Hall (All ages)

Dark Star Orchestra Friday Sep 10, 2010 8:00 PM - All Ages Show - Dark Star Orchestras shows are built off the extensive catalog of the Grateful Dead. This allows music fans both young and old to share in the experience. Dark Star Orchestra presents its critically acclaimed live show at esteemed venues from coast to coast and internationally. Grateful Dead classics are performed in the same way that an orchestra interprets music of classical composers. The composer spirit is derived and channeled as the players capture the excitement and innovation of the original performances and compositions. Touring nationwide for eleven years to the tune of over 1700 shows since forming, the band's determined commitment to "raising the Dead" has drawn national media attention.

Drive-by Truckers @ Minglewood Hall (All ages)

Drive-By Truckers Friday Sep 17, 2010 8:00 PM - All Ages Show - It seems simplest to understand Patterson Hood as the director and/or producer of low-budget films, which is maybe what he thought he was doing when this all started. Each is released in record album form under the name Drive-By Truckers and features a closely held assortment of friends and combatants. Ten of those, so far, going back to 1998’s Gangstabilly, plus two more under Hood’s own name, have delighted the critics and enthralled fans. Each release filled with carefully told, fiercely rendered short subjects. Cinematic songs. Not Ed Wood films, by the way. More…well, did you see John McNaughton’s Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Or, perhaps better, their friend Ray McKinnon’s short, The Accountant?

Japan & Nature: Spirits of the Seasons at CMOM

Celebrate nature with the children of Japan and see how nature fits into their everyday lives - picnic under cherry blossoms, go camping and hunt for bugs, help get ready for New Year's, and try your hand at Japanese calligraphy! The exhibit invites children and families to explore through hands-on activities, dramatic play and multi-media experiences how nature is reflected and celebrated in the everyday lives of Japanese children. Filled with stories, artifacts, drawings, photographs and documentary videos from Japan, children travel to four areas of Japan during the four seasons. The exhibit is designed around universal aspects of childhood - family, school, play and holiday celebrations - and is divided into four fun-filled interactive zones. Each zone is representative of a different season and a specific geographical region, allowing children to experience year round living in Japan. Kids can enjoy the spring time cherry blossom festival with a picnic in Fukuoka; summer vacation fishing in Japan's largest lake, Lake Biwa; visit a sacred Shinto shrine on a beautiful fall day in Kyoto while attending the rice harvest festival; then finish the year abroad with winter in Sapporo, celebrating New Year's inside a cozy Japanese winter home by playing a traditional New Year's game and trying special winter foods. Children also learn how to write calligraphy and try on kimonos and getas. In "Japan & Nature: Spirits of the Seasons," children explore how people and their ways of life are shaped by where they live. By experiencing how their counterparts in Japan celebrate the seasons and their natural environment, children discover the commonalties they share. This exhibition meets national curriculum standards for social studies, behavioral studies, geography, and visual arts. The exhibit was created by the Brooklyn Children's Museum. The Children's Museum of Memphis 901-458-2678 Open 7 Days a Week: Mon-Sat, 9am-5pm, & Sun, 12 noon-5pm
